7 Alternatives to Christmas Trees

February 25, 2022

Have you space for holiday cheer but not for Christmas trees? Or have you simply decided against getting one altogether this year? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

The Christmas tree tradition as we know it has been integral to the holidays since the 16th century when devout Christians in Germany brought embellished trees into their homes. These trees are among the most recognisable elements of Christmas itself, but a bit of creativity can prove that it doesn’t need to be a wide evergreen tree to capture the magic of Noel.

Here are some Christmas tree alternatives for you to try at home.

  1. Cosy corner

For this tree, simply find a bare corner that protrudes outwards in your house and pin some pine garland or tinsel horizontally. Leave a gap between each and gradually make the lengths longer as you go down the tree. Next, add some fairy lights and drape them throughout each row before adding baubles and other decorations. Finally, stick a star to the top and your tree is good to go!

2. Lush ladder

Love the look of a decorative ladder? Then this tree is perfect for you. Simply open up a double-sided ladder and hang baubles on some string from each step to vary the lengths. Place a star on the top and add decorations or presents to each step if you want a fuller look.

3. Rustic Ribbons

For a more rustic tree, go to your garden and find some branches. Vary the lengths and order them from top to bottom of smallest to largest. String the branches together before hanging them up with some baubles and bows.

4. Bookworm Bulbs

This simple idea involves gathering the books in your house and assembling them in the shape of a tree. This can be done against a wall or if you have enough books, you can build it out with a circular base. Display them with their coloured spines or with the blank pages outwards. Lastly, string some tinsel or lights around them and voila! A boho bookworm Christmas tree. Another suggestion for this tree is to leave the books on their shelf but slant them inwards. Add more books to each shelf as you descend, and add a star on top. If you have enough shelves, stack some books on top of each other at the bottom to resemble the tree’s trunk.

5. Cheerful Cards

Feeding two birds with one scone is always a plus when it comes to the madness of Christmas time. For this one, you get a lovely tree while also showing off the Christmas cards you’ve received. Simply assemble all of your cards from your relatives and friends into the shape of a colourful tree. You may have to wait until later in December to have enough cards, so this one is perfect for a last-minute display!

6. Raking around the Christmas Tree

This idea is not only very clever but also very easy! Simply take the flat head of a leaf rake, hang it up and before decorating it with baubles and ribbons. Don’t forget a mini star for the top.

7. Festive family tree

This tree is similar to Cheerful Cards, except this one features photos of family members. You can use photos that are framed or not, photos of individuals or groups, or photos in colour or black and white. They can be photos laying around the house or you can get some new ones printed. Arrange the photos in the shape of a tree and drape lights around the edges to make the faces in between really stand out. This idea is perfect for those abroad missing their family members or who may be missing a loved one this Christmas.
