Trends of Christmas 2020

February 25, 2022

Christmas 2020 was a strange one, to say the least. There were many things that couldn’t proceed in their usual fashion. However, it was still important to celebrate in what ways we could and make do with what was available. Here are the top trends from Christmas 2020.

Lights, and in particular fairy lights, made a huge comeback in recent years. They became a staple for many teenage bedrooms, but they’ve now moved into other areas of the house. 2020 saw lights become a big part of home decor. Clear lights have been popular for a number of years, but strips of coloured lights have also made their way into different rooms. Controlled by a small remote, these lights can be altered depending on whatever mood you’re in and have certainly brightened up the long, dark days at home.

Due to restrictions as a result of the growth from COVID-19, outings to the cinema are a somewhat faraway dream for the moment. This doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy new movies or old classics though. Many people decided that 2020 was the year to perfect a home cinema set-up. Whether it was with your TV, a projector on your sitting room wall or even an outside wall, home cinemas became popular due to their ease. They are a great way to spend an evening, with plenty of blankets and treats, as well as your favourite Christmas film.

Because visits were restricted, creating beautiful displays that can be seen from the outside was extremely popular. Whether it was in windows or lights around the house, public displays of Christmas were seen all around the country. Coloured lights filled almost every street and decorating trees and poles could be seen in many estates. Some houses with decorations raised money for charity and saw vast amounts of socially distanced guests and even media crews. It filled the void for many who could not go into town to see the light displays or go to Dublin Zoo for the annual Wild Lights.

While it may not have been a choice initially, making the most of what we had was important around Christmas, and produced some beautiful handmade decorations. Pressing flowers, drying oranges, using the leaves and branches from your garden and beyond – whatever could be made was. DIYs were a great way to keep kids busy or to relax after a week of working from home.

With many people creating their own products from an array of material, an abundance of new shops were opened up. These shops were operated usually from people’s homes. Buy Irish campaigns were featured all over social media as well as on TV and in newspapers. Keeping businesses ticking over while securing the perfect gifts or decor was crucial this Christmas after the year we’ve had. The result of this was beautiful products that some may not have ever thought to buy otherwise. It also helped many people who were out of work to pay their bills.
