3 DIY Advent Calendars to Make at Home

February 25, 2022

The countdown to Christmas is always incredibly exciting. Advent calendars can be a great source of Christmas cheer day in, day out throughout December. Buying Advent calendars is a popular trend around the holidays, but making them is even better. You can make Advent calendars out of any household items every year, or you can make one and keep it for years to come. Whatever you choose, here are some Advent calendars to make at home.

  1. Rustic Advent

Boho, natural and rustic themes made a comeback a few years ago and are still the go-to look for many people. If your home at Christmas feels almost like a warm log cabin in the woods surrounded by snow, this is the calendar for you. All you need is a long stick that you can hang up, brown string/twine, brown envelopes, brown labels and sprigs of a tree.

Firstly, tie the brown twine onto the stick. After this, stick the tree and labels to each envelope and number them. When you have this done, you can fill them up with whatever treats you want. Finally, seal them shut with tape or glue. Connect them to the bottom of the strings using a staple and you’re all done!

2. Eco-Friendly Advent

Every week, we may throw out a handful of toilet paper roll because, in fairness, what else would we do with them? However, these things are a godsend when it comes to crafting. Gather up 24 of these empty rolls and get to work. There are so many different ways you can style your advent calendar using these, but today, we’re going to look at the house method. By the house method, all we mean is to style it in the shape of a house. Simple!

What you will need apart from rolls is brown paper and cardboard. First, trace around the roll 24 times so that you have coverings for the top of the rolls. Number these before sticking them on after you’ve placed the treat inside. You can either go from 1-24 or stick them on randomly. Cut your cardboard and re-stick it into the shape of a roof. If you have toilet paper roll leftover, you can even make a chimney and use some toilet paper as the smoke.

3. Re-usable Advent

Investing a little bit into items for your Advent calendar can mean that they can be kept for many years to come. Again, there are many different styles for Advent calendars like this. For our one, you’ll need a decent-sized chalkboard and chalk, string, clothes pegs and bags or envelopes.

Firstly, line out the numbers on the chalkboard and decorate it, if you wish to do so. Next, hang rows of string underneath these numbers. Fill up your bags before simply using your peg to attach them onto it. Advent calendars like this are great because you can pack up all the bits and use them again next year. You can use the chalk to draw different designs on it which can help you feel as though it’s brand new for each Christmas.
