5 Irish Christmas Markets

February 25, 2022

Christmas markets were traditionally a big thing in continental Europe, but in recent years this trend has moved to other countries. Ireland is among many countries that celebrate Christmas by hosting marvellous markets. The charm of a market doesn’t change regardless of what part of the world you’re in. This can certainly be said for Irish Christmas markets too. Here are some of the best ones you can visit without needing to catch a flight abroad.

  1. Glow Cork (A Cork Christmas Celebration)

Cork is a wonderful destination any time of the year, but this market makes the trip even more special. It is held at Cork City’s Grand Parade and Bishop Lucey Park. Like any good Christmas market, you’ll find carousel rides, choirs singing beautifully festive songs, artisan foods and of course, mulled wine. The Ferris wheel will give you views of the city below, up to 30 meters above the ground.

2. The Galway Christmas Market

This market is one of the most popular in Ireland. It is the country’s longest running Christmas market, despite the fact it has only been open since 2013. This is nothing when you consider European ones. The city is completely engrossed in festive spirit as the markets span from Eyre Square to Spanish Arch. There are over 50 stalls to take in and enjoy the food and drink on offer. The German beer tent in Eyre Square is a particularly popular spot for Bavarian beer, pretzels and sauerkraut.

3. The Belfast Christmas Market

Every year, Belfast’s City Hall becomes a traditional German-style Christmas market. Over 90 handcrafted wooden chalets welcome customers to browse their wonderful items. Traders from across Europe from countries such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Republic of Ireland travel to the city to sell their goods. After you’ve bought your presents or indeed while you browse, you can purchase French crepes, Belgian chocolates and German bratwurst. There is even a letterbox on the grounds that goes directly to Santa. If you post a letter to him by the 18th of December, you’ll receive a reply!

4. Waterford Winterval

The city of Waterford is transformed into a winter wonderland from early November right through to Christmas. There are many different activities around the markets including an ice rink and Christmas carousel. Children can visit Santa at his Grotto as well as the Toy Museum and the Winterval Express Train. The Exploration Dome features a series of digital 360 degree movies including stars in the night’s sky, snow formation and many others. Enjoy some treats while you take in the stalls and what they have to offer.

5. The Wicklow Christmas Market

The Abbey Grounds in Wicklow town host this new Christmas Market. It offers many fun activities such as Santa Express and a Ski Lodge Bar, as well as an alpaca experience! Gingerbread decorating workshops welcome people in to create the perfect festive friend. Visitors can enjoy artisan foods and other food and drinks while browsing handmade gifts and ornaments. There is also a craft market to enjoy.
