Whether it’s in the weeks before the big day or the weird lull between Christmas and New Years, movies are key to filling up our time and getting us in the festive spirit. Most Christmas films feature magic, reindeers and Santa Claus. However, your favourite festive film may not be very merry. Here are some of the best festive films that are not even about the holiday at all.
Every single one of these films can be enjoyed around the festive period. They’re warm, snowy and cosy – Even during moments where Harry is in trouble. We also get to see the characters celebrate Christmas on a number of occasions and the magical Christmas trees dotted around the setting. These films have a certain charm to them that just makes you want to snuggle up on the couch and watch the wizarding world of Hogwarts.
2. When Harry Met Sally
This film takes us on a journey through the lives of two acquaintances who have just graduated from college. They meet momentarily throughout the years and we get a glimpse into their lives and how they change. The film is filled with autumnal scenes of New York into Christmas and the ending of the film takes place at a wonderful party on New Year’s Eve. Let’s not forget the wonderful scene where the pair carries a large Christmas tree.
3. The Sound of Music
Maybe because it’s a classic or maybe because it’s always on at Christmas, this film has become a favourite to watch around the holidays. Fun, singing and beautiful scenes of Austria and important components of this film. It has many themes within that are significant around the holidays such as love, joy and optimism. This film is a family favourite, and there is nothing better than watching it with those around you.
4. Mean Girls
This cult classic from the noughties is truly iconic regardless of what time of year it is. However, it has one particularly merry scene in which the girls dance to Jingle Bell Rock while wearing Santa suits and hats. Mean Girls is the perfect film to put on if traditional Christmas films aren’t for you.
5. Die Hard
Die Hard follows a New York City policeman who is visiting his family on Christmas Eve. His Christmas party is hijacked by a group of terrorists. He decides it’s up to him to save them all. A lot of people swear that this film is their favourite Christmas film and will simply not hear it when others say that it’s not festive.
