The Late Late Toy Show is the best night of the year and in 2020, this was no different. This year’s Toy Show was the much needed night of fun that we all needed. The theme of this year’s show was Roald Dahl and Ryan Tubridy dawned his best Fantastic Mr Fox costume. Everyone on the show followed social distancing and COVID-19 guidelines. However, this did not hinder the fun! In no particular order, here are some of the top moments from the 2020 Late Late Toy Show.
In keeping with Covid guidelines, RTÉ was sure to bring in their most trusted source – Garda Matthew. This young future Garda was the strict enforcer of all social distancing and even had a two-metre stick to make sure Ryan was standing far enough away.
Matthew is certainly the template for staying safe around Christmas time this year.
2. Saoirse
The Toy Show had two Saoirses this year and both of them stole the hearts of the nation. The first was a vet-to-be. She showed Ryan how she used a veterinary set to look after a stuffed toy and was sure to check it out for COVID-19.
The UCD School of Veterinary Medicine has already welcomed her.
3. The Other Saoirse
Saoirse Ruane from Galway was the second Saoirse to feature on the show. She told the story about her amputated leg and had the country in tears listening to her. When shown her prosthetic leg with a unicorn on it, Ryan asked, “How can a prosthetic leg be so beautiful?”
Saoirse had three dreams to share with Ryan. The first was to be on the Toy Show, the second was to be walking by Christmas and the third was to go on a family holiday. Saoirse achieved her first two dreams, and Tubbs granted her third.
4. Celebrity Cameos
A Toy Show wouldn’t be complete without a few surprise celebrity guests. This year’s featured Gary Barlow via video link singing along with Irish children around the world who can’t come home for Christmas.
The highlight of the night for many, however, was when Michael Moloney from Ballina was surprised by singer Dermot Kennedy who performed a duet with him. The surprise on Michael’s face was incredible. The pair bonded backstage socially distanced afterwards.
5. Adam King
Adam absolutely stole the hearts of the nation. Upon entering the set, he showed Ryan his cut-out “Hug For You” love heart which has influenced many children and adults alike to create the same. A graffiti depiction of it has even appeared in Dublin City.
However, it was Adam’s passion for space that stole the show. He told Ryan how he would love to an astronaut, but could not due to a medical condition. Thankfully, this has not put him off wanting to work with NASA. The week after the Toy Show, Adam was welcomed back on to the Late Late Show via video call to speak with astronaut Chris Hadfield.
During the Toy Show, Adam was pleasantly surprised by John Doyle, a hospital porter who Adam became friendly with. At this point, all of our hearts were well and truly melted.
